2014 – Big Year for the Actuate Blog

The last days of 2014 are upon us. It’s been a big year at Actuate, and one thing we’re proud of (among many – more about that next week) is the growth of this blog. Thank you for reading, commenting and sharing.

A little background: In April 2014 we consolidated several different company blogs onto a single platform and expanded the ranks of our contributors. We now have a dozen great people sharing news and information about embedded analytics, customer communications, document accessibility, data visualization, events, webinars and much more, all in one place.

Our team now strives to publish new content every workday. Since we ramped up our efforts, we hit that goal every month except August, on average. (Summer vacations, anyone?) This graph shows the number of blog posts we published per month in 2014.

One of our goals as a company is to help you, our customers and prospects, become more data driven in your decision-making. Being data driven is our internal goal, too, so we’ve combed through our stats to see which blog posts were most read in 2014. The Top 10, in descending order, are:

Introducing BIRT iHub F-Type: Connecting to Data and Creating a Design by Michael Williams explains the role of BIRT Designer and its relationship to BIRT iHub F-Type, our freemium product.

Introducing BIRT iHub F-Type: Installing on Windows by Virgil Dodson shows how to install our freemium product on a Windows computer.

The Best Way to Leap into Mobile Development [Part 1] by Daniel Melcher is a two-part series on mobile development strategy.

7 Free or Cheap Ways to Learn Data Science by Fred Sandsmark rounds up of some low- or no-cost education options. Thanks to suggestions offered in comments, we identified more than a dozen learning opportunities.

Actuate Launches BIRT iHub F-Type: The Evolution of BIRT is Now by Michael Singer introduces our new freemium server product to the world.

Using BIRT Viewer Toolkit as the Default Viewer by Kristopher Clark talks about an Actuate tool for consuming data designs.

Introducing BIRT iHub F-Type: Installing on Linux by Kristopher Clark shows BIRT iHub F-Type installation steps for the Linux platform.

Introducing BIRT iHub F-Type: Running the VMware Image by Michael Williams gives advice for running our freemium product in a virtual server.

Introducing BIRT iHub F-Type: Integrating into Applications by Michael Williams shows how BIRT iHub F-Type can provide the engine for data driven applications.

Become a BIRT Expert with the BIRT Developer Video Series by Michael Singer outlines the many hours of free online training Actuate provides via YouTube. We also have a company YouTube channel with more videos.

Looking at our end-of-year stats, we can see that you’re hungry for serious, technical, how-to information on using Actuate products. You’re eager for resources to help you do your job better. We’ve also learned that you enjoy hearing from your peers in our popular “3 Questions” interview series; though none cracked into the top 10, several of them (including interviews with Kai Kreuzer, Naomi Robbins, and Benjamin Cabé) were widely read and shared.

As we look to 2015, we pledge to bring you more of what you want. Bill Clark and Clement Wong have many more BIRT extensions to share, and we’re planning a series of posts about our APIs written by Brian Combs. Subscribe (at left) and we’ll let you know when new content is posted.

What else would you like to see here? Please let us know in the comments or via email at blogactuate@actuate.com. Thanks for reading.
